Slow Down, Stop, and Stay. A Public Space Intervention

For the social impact of this intervention in space, in the city of Barcelona, specifically in the district of Ciutat Vella. For the students’ great work of reflection on public space and the gentrification of the Raval. It is also important to highlight the rethinking of new uses of the Plaça dels Àngels through appropriation, involving the neighbours and all users of the square.

De la ciudad al mar

A continuous floor that brings new sensations. Through the natural elements ‘earth’ and ‘water’ it is intended to give the user a flexible design, emptying the container and giving a continuous floor.

The proposal is based mainly on two principles: the creation of gaps in slabs of generous proportions and the creation of thick walls at the ends that serve as a container for all programs and uses.

The intention with the creation of these gaps is to provide the vertical connection of the plants
and give natural light to the house, in addition to the continuous connection with nature.

We propose the creation of multipurpose spaces that generate the thick furniture of the perimeter through different uses or activities. That is why they adapt and convert according to the function. The proposed openings get the feeling of open space and related to the environment.

Vivarium

The space to reform is an antique factory in Calatrava street. The main objective is to improve the workspace shared by three advertising companies.

“Vivarium” recovers the industrial atmosphere, providing warmth and implanting biophilia in the interior. It provides the users a place to boost their creativity, improving their well-being and guaranteeing their personal engagement. The design strategy departs from a striated permeable mesh both in the interior and the exterior, creating a dynamic path into the building. There’s a relation between the open and close spaces, each of them adapted to each company’s needs and the common need for boosting the different stages of the creative process: areas in which you can grow ideas, nurture and develop them with the aim of getting the final project: the fruit.

REC 0.15 Pop Up Store

Experimental store created departing from units of beer crates, using different building systems with the aim of creating an element with different functions, which will be identified as a whole.

The purpose was to create an open space with a lattice shade that allowed enjoying the different REC activities, such as the entrance of the pop-up store, the DJ stand, the grandstand or the food area.

The multiplicity of activities around this element generated dynamic fluxes that made this place an epicenter inside the fair, since it also worked as an icon, because it was seen by the users as the meeting and resting place.

On Pointe. Developing a Parametric System For Pointe Shoe Customization De Marilena Christodoulou

A Pointe Shoe is worn by ballet dancers while performing en pointe. This ballet technique, which is performed by rising to the tips of the toes, enables dancers to create the illusion of incredible lightness and sylph‐like appearance. However, pointe work causes pain, blisters, calluses, and disfigurement of the feet, commonly known among dancers.

These injuries can be prevented if the feet are better supported. Dancers, pointe shoe fitters, and podiatrists agree that finding Pointe Shoes which fit correctly and adjust throughout your career could help to avoid feet injuries. Sports clothing are demanding a radical shift requiring the integration of digital technologies not only in making but also in designing. Each dancer has unique feet, with variations of toe length and shape, arch flexibility, and mechanical strength.

The objective of this study is to prove that a parametric system can be developed for designing a pointe shoe adaptable to all feet.

Off Space

OFF SPACE is a story about changing reality and suspending time. In our story, everyone can go slower to observe and interpret the world around them from different viewpoints.

When you enter, your senses are challenged to perceive your environment in a completely new way. Because what you see is not what you hear and what you hear is not what you think.

Marró Terra

‘Marró Terra’ (Brown Earth) is a restaurant that evokes familiarity between those who cook and those who eat, cuisine capable of reflecting the roots of Mediterranean gastronomy under the concept of “sea” and “land”, offering local, seasonal, fresh, home-made and natural products.

The project is divided into different territories called “Macro Terras”, which are responsible for offering multiple activities for the enjoyment of their customers, featuring show cooking areas, bar, lounge, dining room, market and tapas bar. All united under a concept of directed circulation represented by the “sea”, while the colour brown from the “earth” (‘marró’ in Catalan) characterises a large part of the interiors through a range of natural materials such as terracotta, concrete, wood and wicker. This way, the sensations of crafts and naturalness of the project are accentuated even more.

Vitra Factory

The proposal to redesign the commercial space of the offices and showroom of Vitra Barcelona is based on the transformation of the existing space into another one conceived as an “ideas factory”, making use of an authentic and unique social networking that allows the way design professionals work and interact with the brand to be redefined. The fundamental premise is to develop and share ideas. Immersed in a special type inherent to the brand, which conveys all of its values and identity, using design tools applied to the furniture and display systems of the Vitra community.

Tailored Spring

After analysis of the Born district of Barcelona, the final shop window concept was composed. The accumulation and the layers of stories in the neighbourhood were the starting point for the project. Our interpretation of spring is the process of transition from winter.

MOISTORE is known for the authenticity and unique language of its design, which comes from the raw material and from how the designer applies it in their creations. This aspect is preserved in the creation of the ambience for the shop window. The materials used are inspired by the designer’s tools and the act of sewing. The variety ranges from rice paper to basic fabric together with aluminium.

Taking Maison Martin Margiela and the atmosphere of their stores as the reference, the background permits transparency, which shows the real identity of the store to the pedestrians passing by. The patterns are placed in a way that signifies progress and change and that has a final result, which is the piece of clothing.

Structural Performative System

Computational design project based on a simple process of link weaving to which changes are made through digital and physical models. This way, a wide range of variations in the final woven product is achieved, expressing the process in the form of computer code, which affords it new possibilities.

The project consists of a form-finding exercise, in which each weaving connection applies tension to the overall structure, which leads to a deviation and a change in the neighbouring connections. The sum of all these changes allows the generation of a large number of variations globally throughout the whole structure of the fabric. In turn, an empirical study into the project is able to develop a spatial and morphological complexity generating system through the application of these small changes.

Moho System

Under the slogan “One system, infinite homes”, Moho System is born with the aim of being a modern and contemporary response to the different ways of inhabiting the spaces of present-day family units.

With an uncluttered and flexible design, Moho System adapts to us and enables us to personalise the different spaces that we inhabit to the maximum. A system for an ever more changing and globalised world. A system for all our lives.

The twenty modules that comprise it meet all the living needs of users. These are arranged around a unifying wall containing the installations. Thanks to its ease of assembly, the user will be able to vary the space layout according to the evolution of their needs.

Loft for a Jeweler

Redesign of an industrial space as a home, located in the old Lehmann Factory. The project aims to highlight the industrial characteristics of the space and combine them with a clear geometry that maximises the surface area.

The space contains, on the ground floor, a jewellery workshop, a day area comprised of a living/dining room and open-plan kitchen, and a green area to the rear in the new interior courtyard. The mezzanine is dominated by the piano, and in the private areas are the master bedroom, the guest bedroom and the study. Raw and honest materials such as iron, concrete and wood conceive a smooth and airy space, where pieces of furniture, works of art and unique lighting solutions are placed for each ambience, which, as they are treated like jewels, exalt the silversmithing spirit of each object.

Loft for a Writer

Emptying a space, understanding it as an empty box and that the atmosphere, the feeling and the ambience perceived there is the very life of the person living there. The sense of a loft taken to the most literal level.

La Envolvente at Santa&Cole

The central offices of Santa & Cole are situated in a park covering over 130 hectares 30 km to the north of Barcelona. Surrounded by greenery, the interior is designed for creative minds devoted to publishing the design that can move. Previously, it was a school and the structure of the building provides the perfect balance between open spaces and individual offices or tranquil meeting areas. To create a more flowing transition between these spaces, we have created a linear wooden membrane on the horizontal axis, which rises vertically to the second floor, where we have double-height openings. This membrane has different functions: it organises, exhibits products, creates and divides spaces – but at all times allowing other rooms to be seen – absorbs doors, window displays, niches, shelves and storage. There is a showroom and a museum on the first floor that can be visited by clients, architects, designers and students. The design reflects the corporate identity in its simplicity.

Inside the Light

The project concerns an intervention in the offices of Santa&Cole, located in Belloch. First of all, we approached the project based on energy efficiency, economy, comfort and the rationalisation of spaces. Secondly, we were inspired by what Santa&Cole conveys: simplicity, warmth, balance and, of course, design.

With this in mind, we began by fitting the programme on a single floor, the ground floor. The central area houses the showroom, as well as spaces for meetings and for coming together. In the peripheral areas, we find the work spaces per se, including the cafeteria, conference room and individual offices.

As regards the first floor, we approached it as an open space, traversed by a structure made up of wooden panels and coloured strands, which would allow the hosting of all types of activities: relaxation, inspiration or, evidently, events. Sound accompanies us in this sensorama and generates sensations.

Implementation Project for Santa&Cole in Belloch

The series of planes inherited by the building’s architecture serves as inspiration to generate a series of spatial rhythms in the interior of the building. A new interior architecture is respectfully added to another pre-existing one.
The planes separate without compartmentalising, they are surfaces with materials that improve what already exists, bring it up to date and make it dynamic. They are ceiling, floor and wall, autonomous planes that float, slide and generate ambiences characterised by environmental rather than functional situations.

The simplicity of the planes allows the product to be highlighted, offering a framework in which to lay it out. In the end, an architecture is created that can be used on all scales and for all uses, from the interior space of offices to exhibition stands at trade fairs.

El Olivar

El Olivar is a restoration project for the Tragaluz group, located in the Maldà arcade, in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, an area that receives high tourist and local resident flows and one with high commercial exposure. It comprises an architectural programme that seeks to integrate pure materials and olive trees, one of the principal ingredients of the cuisine and culture of this region, through a variety of spaces.

“Just as the branches of the olive tree spread and their fruit is born, so El Olivar is born of a new culinary experience, where architecture is part of every user’s journey, which enables them to discover the different spaces.”

Cristal Palace

From analysis of the client, the area where the hotel is situated and the people who frequent it, we concluded that it would be appropriate to create a space that was related to culture, art and leisure. Based on this and on the hotel’s original name, Cristal Palace, a construction that allowed a visual continuity between interior and exterior and in which glass interacts in interesting ways with the sun, a mixed space was conceptualised: hotel + exhibitions and events gallery. It is designed in a way to be a tribute to its name, where the protagonists are transparencies, semi-transparencies and light. Glass, light and colour, their characteristics and different interactions, between themselves and with the human body, are used to produce sensations in each space.

Core – Santa & Cole

Redesign of the offices of the SANTA&COLE company, based on the very product that they commercialise. Hence the CÔRE project, which studies the way in which each of the brand’s products is created and the importance that is given to the functionality of them all. This way, the central concept that the brand’s products communicate and that is sought to be conveyed to the redesigned space is the ability to emote with the simple.

The project aims to imbue the space with different attributes, such as a domestic, flexible and unexpected atmosphere. The project centres on a space defined as VITALITY CORE, the focal point of the design and of the functionality represented in the form of a library. Branching out from this are a number of spaces, such as the “Quiet Zone”, the “Connect Zone” and the “Focus Zone”, each one designed according to the changing needs of the employees.

Clo – Essence in Every Stitch

“Essence in Every Stitch” is the concept that has been used in an intervention on the shop window of the CLO store, in Barcelona’s Born district, through an art installation that is distilled through the representation of knitting needles, telling us a local and sustainable story of arts and crafts.
To achieve the perfect harmony, a hanging piece in the shape of a cloud was designed that grouped together 30-cm long sewing needles hanging from hemp threads, created by a local artisan using recycled wood from a Barcelona mansion dating from 1837.

The adhesive vinyl on the glass of the window display reflects the origin of the pieces worn by the shop mannequin chosen as the centrepiece, with colours from the 2017 spring – summer season.
The final result conveys and recaptures the brand values: CLO is local design, it is slow fashion, it is organic and sustainable, it is #essence in every stitch.
