Home and Workshop

The project’s two main objectives are to make the most of the natural light and develop a programme where there is a relationship between the interior and the exterior. When transferring these objectives to the initial sketches, we had the idea of creating wrought-iron work at different levels on the top floor, which become higher as they move further away from the façade, creating tiers that look at the windows. This is in such a way that when you position yourself at the rear of the building, this is the highest part, so you can enjoy the natural light and views to the exterior. Another important decision in the project was to refurbish the window that is at the height of the change of section of the exterior stairs, turning it into an access to the second floor, where the home part of the programme is developed.

As a solution for separating the different heights and rooms, we proposed different vertical planes that offer different concepts: lighting, transparency, reflection…

Vilassar 57

“Vilassar 57. Sensations” presents the restoration of an old fishermen’s home. The rooms are articulated through a relationship of degrees of intimacy. From the public to the private, various relationship options are embraced between the various rooms in the house, with the courtyard as the axis to interweave them. The project works with textures related to the earth, roots and the sea. Corten steel is the material that relates the interior space with the exterior.

Mental Disorders

“Mental Disorders: Bipolarity” presents a show window based on showing the opposition of poles, helped by the slogan: “humour through the sinister”, where humour is seen as a defence mechanism where the absurd and decontextualisation are key. The project is inspired by emotions experienced in a mental disorder but is represented conceptually to enable the viewer to be able to create their own story on the basis of small stimuli.

Sweetspring

“Sweetspring” presents a proposed shop window for the SONY store. The project approaches the concept of the spring as an explosion of colours, aromas and textures, all based on the spiral as a symbol of movement and dynamism. This sensorial game is constructed on the basis of different levels, with the main one being occupied by a large sweet lollipop, which is presented frontally and laid down horizontally, so that the stick is the base on which the product is displayed.

Ply_Up

“Ply_Up” is a project created in response to the need to place four thousand sportspeople in the old tobacco factory in Tarragona during the 2017 Mediterranean Games. The concept of the module is created out of the dissociation of the public/private functions of the habitat: live-vertical, sleep-horizontal. The aim this way is to generate more free space in the plant, creating meeting spaces for the athletes where they can get to know each other, eat and meet by chance or design.

The House of Bernarda Alba

“Circus: The House of Bernarda Alba” is a representation based on the play “La Casa de Bernarda Alba” by Federico García Lorca. The proposal embraces the contemporary, acrobatic, visual, poetic, dramatic and emotional circus. Comprised of a mix of techniques such as scripted theatre, dance and music, the project takes place in Barcelona’s Teatre Grec and both its set design and the atrezzo and wardrobe are halfway between the characters in the book and the animal world.

Garden House Vilassar de Mar

“Interior and Garden Project for a Traditional Urban House in Vilassar de Mar” presents the restoration of an old fishermen’s home. The proposal guts the interior of the building, leaving a membrane that covers the whole of the open space. This interior is supported on a habitable service wall that contains all of the installations. The structure is based on cross beams, as in the original structure, on which wrought ironwork is supported. The whole idea aims to play with privacy through space and height

Equal Society

“Equal Society” is a proposal to transform one of the shop windows of the VINÇON store, based on a black humour vision inspired by films and plays in the noir genre. The idea is inspired by George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, to create a space in which the protagonists are five piglets with knives around a picnic basket. This work on the human condition pulls the viewer in while displaying the VINÇON products in the shop window. The jury rated it highly for the “synergy of the concepts of black humour, irony, beauty and sinisterness.”

Fishermen’s Home

“Fishermen’s Home” presents the process of refurbishing a home located in Vilassar de Mar. The design concept revolves around the idea of making the house breathe. For this, the air flow is marked by means of natural ventilation generated in the longitudinal spaces of the rooms, creating a sensation of depth and breadth, visually merging the interior and the exterior. In the centre of the house is the staircase, the project’s leitmotiv, which is suspended in the air and gathered by a fishing net.

The Circus

“The Circus” is a theatrical proposal based on fantasy and comprised of seven acrobats and musicians, which shows us a forest and a maze through surrealist, subtle and poetic scenes. The adventures of the characters, based on the contemporary world, take place in these spaces. The proposal gives each character a different circus technique and the set design is based on a room covered in sand. The spectator finds themselves in a confusing space, filled with smoke and cold lights, where a narrator steadily gives shape to this unnerving story.

Tell Your Story

“Tell Your Story” focuses on the ability for discovery and transformation that makes children evolve throughout their development. The project presents a world of fantasy where children can experiment with the brand’s more artistic toys and pieces. The aim is to ensure that they feel comfortable being themselves, so visual rules are used to incentivise this. The work focuses not only a physical journey through the shop, but it also complements it with a specific product range and website.

Interior restoration by Guasch

“Restoration of the Attic of the French Institute of Barcelona” proposes the restoration of the interior space designed by the emblematic architect José Antonio Coderch. The proposal is divided into three unique spaces for the guests’ area, the main dwelling and the theatre. With no divisions between the spaces, but maintaining the privacy of each one, and with all types of doors are removed thanks to the geometry of the vertical walls. The jury rated it highly for its “ability to reinterpret coherently the work of a master architect.”

Interior restoration by Garcia Maimo

“Interior of a Home in the French Institute of Barcelona” presents a proposed complete restoration of the attic floor at the French Institute in Barcelona, by architect José Antonio Coderch. The project is based on an open-plan and multifunctional idea to ensure greater visual and spatial breadth, with the only closed element being a wooden volume that acts as container for the entrances, toilet and storage area. This way, a gradation of areas is proposed that goes from the more private to the more public.

Interior restoration by Zarceño and Diaz

“Interior of a Home in the French Institute of Barcelona” presents a proposed complete restoration of the attic floor at the French Institute in Barcelona, by architect José Antonio Coderch. The project presents an orderly floor plan that fosters clear movement, which is determined by the function and activity to be carried out in each space. The materials, textures, colours and lighting ensure that the spaces are multi-purpose and have external views and natural light all year round.

La Pau Neighbourhood Integration Project

“La Pau Neighbourhood Integration Project” seeks to re-establish a connection between the residents of this Barcelona neighbourhood and the rest of the city, leading them towards a more sustainable vision that will prevail and evolve over time. The strategies are put forward on the level of neighbourhood, block and home and aim to ensure realistic results with immediate benefits, at a low investment and that is easy to roll out. The aim is to meet the residents’ existing needs and create trends that turn La Pau into a “time-proof” neighbourhood.

Natural Construction

“Natural Construction” plans the design of the offices and the open centre of the Arrels Foundation, an institution devoted to caring for homeless people in Barcelona. It was decided that the place lacked the affinity of its users, so the use of simple and welcoming materials was proposed, as was the integration of the users in the manufacturing process, so that they made the place their own and adopted it as theirs. The importance of the project lies in creating a realistic, executable and viable design with the scant resources available, but one that is of great use to the user.

Lu.Pa

“Lu.Pa” proposes a project that is summarised in the saying of design engineer Colin Chapman, “simplify and then add lightness”. The creators propose an intervention on the courtyard and skylight of the Arrels Foundation: an institution devoted to caring for homeless people in Barcelona. The aim of the intervention is to bring in and channel light in the space, allow air to get in to favour a cool environment and achieve greater warmth throughout the area. The proposed finishes are vinyls and ceramics, observing the tight budget for the work.

Kiehl’s by Moukhmalji

“Kiehl’s” proposes a design for the brand’s retail space by developing its eco-friendly and research values. Using laboratory spaces and experimentation rooms, customers can fill in and try Kiehl’s products. Lastly, the use of noble materials, soft colours and clean and contemporary lines transform the shop into a space where customers will enjoy a shopping experience like no other. The project was awarded the public prize in the year of its presentation.

Kiehl’s by Pérez Andión

“Kiehl’s” proposes raising this cosmetics company into a cult brand. It seeks to work with concepts that can be developed in a space devoted to luxury and the thoughtful display of products. This new store concept aspires to connecting emotionally with the customer, providing a customisable experience and presenting a lifestyle in line with the brand’s attributes. The use of materials, light and the layout of the products is also part of this strategy.

Kiehl’s by Mahmoud and Olazabal

“Kiehl’s” proposes focusing on one of the company’s principal brand attributes: its legacy. The new strategy emphasises the natural essence of the products and reinforces Kiehl’s positioning as a luxury brand. The project undertakes the principal elements of the brand’s ideology, such as its communication, packaging, space, visual merchandising, interface design and technology. The materials used in the new store decoration take the brand’s most iconic object as its reference: The Harley Davidson.
